School Reading Competition
A school environment; as a controlled space for education and learning; is crucial for the Programme’s School Reading Competition. Learners who will be participating in the School Reading Competition will be tested on pronunciation, fluency/proper articulation, context as well as reading comprehension and increased attention. Creative writing is also included in the competition. The winners of the school reading competition will receive a prize. They will be provided with literature books sourced from the local indigenous language writers by Kwetso Consulting Services (Pty) Ltd
Author Visits and Exhibition of books written in African Languages
It is critical to engage local authors who write books in official indigenous languages to give keynote addresses to encourage reading in local schools. Exhibitions of books written in official indigenous languages are included in the Programme.
Book Donation Drive
The book donation drive activity will encompass support for already functional community Book clubs as well as school reading groups/learners’ book reading clubs. These groups will be supported with local language literature books that will be sourced from book collection drive from local communities, local writers, book sponsors as well as books that will be acquired by Kwetso Consulting Services (Pty) Ltd.
Pop – Up Libraries
School and community libraries are central to developing a reading culture, creating literate families and communities. It is disheartening to learn that 62% of South African primary schools do not have libraries. Easy to set-up libraries will be made available as part of the Literary Outreach Programme events in earmarked schools, community centres and reading clubs.
Even though pop-up libraries that will be used in this Programme will not be solving challenges of vast lack of libraries in schools, they will be providing access to indigenous reading books for identified schools and community centres in various areas we will be implementing the Programme.
Book Club creation and support
Local community book clubs will be identified in areas where we will be implementing the Programme to provide them with books collected during the book donation drive. School-led book clubs will be assisted to set-up as well and will also be donated books sourced from the book collection drive as well as those acquired from local writers.
